Studio Arts
Glen Echo Glassworks
One of the DC area's few blown-glass programs, historic studio at Glen Echo Park with instruction from beginner through advanced.
Editor's note
Glassblowing has a steeper learning curve than most studio arts, expect to spend a significant part of your first session learning equipment, safety protocols, and basic technique before making anything. The payoff is a genuinely unusual experience. This is one of the few programs in the region with a public-access hot glass studio.
New to this?
This studio welcomes beginners. No prior experience required.
What to expect your first visit
- Register through glenechopark.org, sessions fill in advance and walk-ins are not typical
- Glen Echo Park is not Metro-accessible; plan to drive or arrange a ride
- Wear natural-fiber clothing, cotton or wool, closed-toe shoes. Avoid synthetic fabrics, loose sleeves, and dangling jewelry near the furnace
- All tools, materials, and safety equipment are provided by the studio
Best for
Adults who want hands-on glassblowing instruction, one of the few DC-area programs offering public access to a working hot-glass studio.
What to expect
Beginner classes cover foundational glassblowing, gathering glass from the furnace, shaping with tools and breath, and finishing a piece. The instructor guides each step directly; nothing in a beginner class is unsupervised. The learning curve is real but the process is structured for adults with no prior experience.
Focused and process-driven. Working in a hot shop requires attention and sequencing, which keeps classes calm and task-oriented. The Glen Echo Park surroundings make the experience feel distinct from a typical studio class.
What to bring
Natural-fiber clothing (cotton or wool) and closed-toe shoes. No synthetic fabrics or loose clothing near the furnace. Glass and tools are provided.
