Afro-diasporic and contemporary classes at a DC community arts institution, open to adults at all levels.

Editor's note

Dance Place is a long-running DC community dance institution with programming rooted in Afro-diasporic performance and cultural practice. Adult classes are part of that broader community mission.

What to expect your first visit

  • Check the current adult class schedule on their website before visiting, programming rotates seasonally
  • Arrive a few minutes early; the Brookland building can take a moment to navigate on a first visit
  • Classes often welcome complete beginners; checking with the front desk is a good first step
  • Brookland/CUA Metro (Red Line) is about two blocks from the studio

Best for

Adults interested in movement traditions rooted in African and African diaspora culture, at any experience level

What to expect

Classes draw from West African, contemporary, and Afro-diasporic movement traditions. Expect a warm-up, structured exercises, and combination phrases that build over the session. Teaching style tends to emphasize musicality and cultural context alongside technique.

Purposeful and community-grounded. The studio has a long institutional presence, and that history is felt in the room.

What to bring

Comfortable movement clothes. Bare feet or soft-soled shoes depending on the class. Water bottle.
