Large arts center on a repurposed historic campus in Lorton, 'TryMe' one-day workshops designed for no-experience beginners, plus ongoing classes.

Editor's note

Workhouse Arts Center operates on the former Lorton Reformatory grounds, an unusual campus housing artist studios, galleries, and one of Northern Virginia's most extensive class programs. The TryMe format is a genuinely no-commitment entry point.

New to this?

This studio welcomes beginners. No prior experience required.

What to expect your first visit

  • Register online in advance, choose a TryMe session for a one-day no-experience intro, or a multi-week course for more structured learning
  • Check the skill level listed in the course description before enrolling
  • Allow extra time to navigate the multi-building campus and find your studio
  • Wear activity-appropriate clothing, messy clothes for ceramics or painting, comfortable movement wear for fitness or dance classes

Best for

Adults who want a broad range of beginner and continuing classes in visual arts and craft within a large campus-style arts center.

What to expect

Visual arts courses run in multi-week sessions covering ceramics, glass, painting, drawing, or fiber arts, with instructor demonstrations followed by guided studio work. TryMe classes offer one-day introductions with all materials provided for adults new to a medium. The Art of Movement program covers fitness and dance-style classes with a separate registration process.

Campus-scale and varied, the Workhouse mixes hobbyists, families, and more serious students across many studios. The overall feel is community arts center rather than specialized school.

What to bring

Comfortable clothing; TryMe classes include materials, while multi-week courses typically require supplies listed at registration.
