Washington Studio School teaches in the tradition of careful observation, classes here expect sustained attention and reward it. If you want to develop actual drawing or painting skill, this is one of the few DC programs structured to do that. When browsing the schedule, look for courses labeled Intro or Basic, these are designed for students with no prior formal training. Higher-level courses assume foundational drawing skills and move faster.

What to expect
Classes are studio-based and practice-driven. Figure drawing sessions work from live models, with instruction focused on proportion, line quality, and form. Instructors give individual feedback during the session; classes are not open-studio or self-directed.
Quiet and concentrated. The townhome setting keeps class sizes small and the pace deliberate, this is not a drop-in creative environment.
