The Sculpture Studio
Resident artist-run stone sculpture studio at Glen Echo Park, small-cohort instruction in traditional and contemporary stone carving.
Editor's note
Stone carving rewards patience, beginners should expect to spend multiple sessions learning tool technique before producing a finished piece. The small cohort format means more direct time with the instructor-artist.
New to this?
This studio welcomes beginners. No prior experience required.
What to expect your first visit
- Register through glenechopark.org, cohort sizes are small and sessions fill in advance
- Glen Echo Park is not Metro-accessible; plan to drive or arrange a ride
- Stone carving is physically demanding, expect to stand for extended periods and work with hand tools
- Confirm what safety equipment and tools are provided when registering
Best for
Adults interested in stone carving who want small-cohort instruction in a hands-on studio, one of the few programs of its kind in the DC area.
What to expect
Classes run in small cohorts over several weeks, with students working on individual pieces using hand tools under the guidance of a resident artist-instructor. Technique is taught progressively, tool handling and material properties come before form. The pace is slow and deliberate.
Quiet and focused. Students work on individual pieces at their own pace within a shared studio. Progress in stone carving is incremental, and the atmosphere reflects that, concentrated rather than energetic.
What to bring
Sturdy closed-toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting stone dust on. Safety equipment is typically provided; confirm when registering.
